2014 Lead Free Compliance
Dear Valued Customer:
On January 4, 2014, the
National Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act
(Federal Public Law 111-380) goes into effect.
This act reduces the maximum amount of
lead to .25% in products used to convey water
for potable water applications.
The new products that meet this
requirement will be labeled and referred to as
Lead Free.
On
or after Jan 4, 2014, it will be illegal to sell
or install non-compliant products in potable
water applications.
Cooney Brothers is taking
numerous steps to address this change
proactively.
A few of the key actions we are taking
include:
-
We are restructuring our inventory so
that non-compliant products that only have
potable water applications will be gone no later
than year end.
As these products sell, we will replace
them with lead free product.
The product manufacturers are planning
their production similarly.
This will result in certain leaded
products becoming unavailable prior to the end
of the year.
Other products will have dual use – both
potable and non-potable applications.
Some of these items will be converted
entirely to lead free; in other cases we will
stock both leaded and lead free product.
-
We are actively training our sales and
warehouse staff.
Training will continue through the year
so that we can assist our customers in
determining the correct product for their
application.
-
We are reviewing customer purchase
history to determine where we need to clarify
whether customer needs are for potable or
non-potable applications.
We expect to work through this, in
coordination with our customers,
in the
next few months.
-
We will add notes to all potentially
non-compliant products indicating that they are
not compliant with the new law.
These notes will start to appear on
shipping papers and invoices in the 2nd
quarter of 2013 – well before the law takes
effect.
Since compliance is a matter of usage
(potable vs non-potable), which we may not know,
the notes will appear even when the customer’s
application may not be covered by the new law.

change.
